A Word About Scholarships

Scholarships for Seniors are available through the Guidance Department at Morristown High School .  All of the awards offered through the Morris Educational Foundation, listed below, are funded by individuals or other foundations in honor of the person for whom the scholarship is named.  There are many other scholarships offered through local and national organizations that are posted as soon as the applications are available, usually beginning in March or April.  All awards are presented on Senior Academic Awards Night in June.

Dorothy F. Johnson Scholarship-- $1,750 per year
This new Scholarship, created through a bequest from the estate of Dorothy F. Johnson, 1947 MHS graduate and community leader, will be awarded to each of two (2) graduating seniors for two years in the amount of $1,750 per student per year. The selected students must be taking business administration related courses now and intending to pursue business administration in college. Proof of declared major is required for continuance. Deadline for application (in Guidance): Spring

French Club--$100

To honor Ruth M. Cohen's passion for teaching French, her husband, Murray, established this annual award and fund for students of French language and literature. Mrs. Cohen taught at MHS for more than 30 years. The student is chosen by the French Department.

John T. Cunningham Scholarship--$1,250
This scholarship was established by the MEF through the sale of the book "Youth's Bright Years: An American High School", written by alumnus John T. Cunningham, class of '32. The MHS graduating senior pursuing a major in the broad field of communications at a four-year college, meeting the criteria of grade point average, related extra-curricular activities, teacher recommendations, and excellent writing skills will be awarded $1,250. Simon Scholars--$1,250 per year
The William E. Simon Foundation is responsible for awarding $1,250 for each of two seniors (one in 2003) graduating from Morristown High School. The winners are selected by the MHS Guidance Department as model candidates for this honor and financial assistance, based on a fine academic record. This award is renewed for each of four years at college if they manintain a 3.0 grade point average. The scholarship will not be offered in 2004, however, all current obligations will be honored until they graduate.

Superintendent's Art Scholarship--$3,000
This scholarship was made possible by Dr. Thomas Ficarra, MSD Superintendent of Schools, who hosted a conference for Superintendents at Drew. The proceeds of the conference were donated to the MEF and used to fund the scholarship.

Wong Family Scholarship--$4,000 per year
Robert Wong, MHS Class of 1967, established this scholarship in memory of his parents. This generous award is for $4000 per year for up to four years. The Morristown High School graduating senior must intend to pursue an undergraduate degree in liberal arts and exemplify the traits of scholarship, perserverance, patience, diligence and consideration of others. The student must continue to meet the listed criteria as he/she moves ahead. Deadline for application (in Guidance): Spring
